PAMJ Special issue on COVID 19 in Africa (Volume 2)

The world is facing one of the most serious health threats in history. The current COVID–19 pandemic has challenged even health systems that have traditionally been considered has resilient. From China through Europe, the Americas and Africa, the COVID-19 in progressing, unabated despite important efforts in place. Although Africa has been hit late compared to other continents, the World Health Organization, through its Director-General, and other global health experts warned African countries to prepare for the worst. The control measures recommended or put in place have been described by some as late, inadequate, and incompatible with the sociocultural, anthropological, and economic realities of Africa. Some experts have voiced their concerns about the effectiveness of these measures in curbing the expanding pandemic and their likely medium to long terms impact on African population. The current focus on COVID-19 response may eventually distract from ongoing efforts to address known causes of morbidity and mortality on the continent such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea leading to an increase in non-COVID-19 related death, particularly in children of undeserved communities. In this second volume, the PAMJ continue to compile the best of African research on the pandemic.
